Food waste in restaurants
If we put together all the food wasted by restaurants, we could recreate Mt Everest. U.S. restaurants alone waste about 22 Billion pounds of food each year (The Problem). Food is a limited resource, so we can't just waste it like this. According to scientific studies, if we want to survive we will have to stop eating meat by 2050 (Wolchover). However, it is possible to reduce/eliminate food waste. restaurants could do these three things to limit food waste: donate their leftover food, let customers take food by themselves (Self-service), and encourage customers to take leftovers home.
It is better for the customers since they won't have to wait for their order. It is also better for restaurants since they won't have to pay for waiters. There won't be any need for them, after all, people will be serving themselves (The Top Benefits).
In conclusion, there are a lot of ways to reduce food waste, like donating food, bringing leftovers home, self-service and more. Restaurants have a lot of options to choose from to not waste food, and, hopefully, they will try to do something. People are starting to understand the problem that food waste is, and even governments are funding research to neutralize it, so hopefully, we'll see the amount of food wasted decrease.

I totally agree with you. I think the most wasted food comes out from restaurants. If they do exactly what you said, the food waste reduces so much.
ReplyDeleteI really like the ideas specially the first one because they could help a lot of people. Another idea could be to composte it and help the environment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how restaurants should donate leftovers and how they should encourage taking home leftover food. I do think that your statement on how self-serving yourself is not really a liable solution but I believe instead menus should tell you or allow you to choose portion sizes so waiters don't get fired and you'd get fresh food from the kitchen.
